Common Reasons for Discolored Teeth

Adult teeth can become stained over time due to a number of reasons. These include:

  • Smoking
  • The use of antibiotics as a young child or teenager
  • Eating and drinking food that is high in tannins, such as coffee, red wine, and carrots
  • Trauma or damage to blood vessels of nerves in the tooth
  • Tooth decay
  • Exposure to excessive levels of fluoride
  • Age
  • Genetics of having thinner enamel that shows underlying dentin

    Do Over-the-Counter Whiteners Work?

We highly recommend you visit a dentist for whitening treatments. Tooth-whitening products are not strong or effective enough as the professional-grade whitening offered at King Centre Dental. OTC products usually result in mediocre results that fade quickly.

Whitening Procedures at King Centre Dental

At our office, the whitening procedure is painless, effective, and completely safe. We’ll schedule a series of visits that will gradually whiten your teeth to your desired color. During your initial whitening consultation, your Alexandria dentist will photographer your starting tooth color to show your progress and monitor your treatment. We will also thoroughly examine your gums and teeth and take the time to get to know you to understand the root causes for the discoloration.

Your hygienist or dentist will then clean your teeth to encourage the whitening process.

There are two types of procedures you may undergo:

    • Vital whitening, or “bleaching”: This is the most common procedure we perform and only whitens the outside of the tooth. We apply a gel made from hydrogen peroxide directly onto the teeth and then shine a light on it to create a chemical reaction that will bleach the outer tooth. The process takes 30 to 90 minutes in 1 to 3 sessions.
    • Non-vital whitening: This process is used on teeth that are stained on the inside from nerve damage. The whitening agent is injected into the tooth itself and then covered with a temporary filling. Multiple treatment sessions may be necessary.

    Potential Risks

Though the whitening procedure is extremely safe, some patients may find that their gums are slightly sensitive for a short period of time. In addition, there is a lack of research on the potential effects of whitening on unborn babies so pregnant mothers should refrain from undergoing tooth whitening until after they give birth.

How Long Do the Results Last?

Teeth whitening is not a “one and done” dental procedure and whiteness will fade based on your lifestyle factors, such as if you are a smoker or frequent coffee drinker. With these activities, staining may come back in about six weeks. However, with proper care, you may not need another treatment for six months to a year.
